Here Comes the Bride (age 85)

Posted on November 21st, 2007 by Courtney in Wedding Fun, News 1 Comment

Mason and ClarkUsually people get hung up on how young a bride and groom are, not how old. There’s definitely some different opinions on how young is too young to get married, but what about being too old?

Well, they say age brings wisdom, and if so, British couple James Mason, 93, and his 85-year-old bride Peggy Clark are probably the wisest newlyweds out there to date. Believe it or not, though, the couple’s combined age of 178 isn’t quite enough to break any world records: the current record was set in 2002 by a French couple with a combined age of 190 years!

It’s just a little bit out of the ordinary to have such a seasoned couple make the marriage commitment, but to Mason and Clark, their love was just found a little later in life. Clark said she had to make the first move, asking Mason did he “come here often” referring to the Elderly Day Center both resided at. Mason replied, “Every day,” and the couple has been inseparable since. Weeks after they first met, the couple wed on Clark’s 185th birthday.

I guess this just goes to show, you never get too old for some things! Here’s hoping the happy, albeit older, couple have a wonderful marriage and many anniversaries together!

Katharine McPhee Engaged!

Posted on November 18th, 2007 by Kori Ellis in Celebrity Weddings, News 2 Comments

Katharine McPheeBeautiful American Idol runner-up Katharine McPhee is reportedly now engaged to actor Nick Cokas.

The 23-year-old McPhee has been showing off her ring as of late and, according to People, she’s just thrilled with her engagement. The cute couple have been dating for a little over a year. They met in 2005 while performing in a L.A. theatre production.

After Coka took her to San Francisco for the Idol audition, the relationship developed. The 42-year-old Cokas is 19 years her senior, but they seem to be a very happy couple.

To me, age doesn’t matter. I’m actually much older than my husband and we are extremely happy. As long as you love and respect each other, differences in age, race, religion and everything else take a back seat.

Congrats to Katharine and Nick! I look forward to hearing about their wedding planning!

Shakira Engaged, but far from Married

Posted on November 9th, 2007 by Courtney in Celebrity Weddings, News 4 Comments

Shakira and Antonio de la RuaThere are tons of people out there that will advise against an engagement that’s too short, but what about an engagement that’s too long? Call me crazy, but I think six and a half years should be plenty of time to get your nuptials in order.

If Columbian singer Shakira hadn’t recently mentioned she was “too busy” to plan her wedding, I wouldn’t even have known she was engaged! That’s probably partly because she’s not my favorite musician, and partly because she’s been fiancée to Antonio de la Rua since March of 2001.

Shakira claims that she and her hubby-to-be simply can’t find time to plan their big day because of her hectic work schedule. But what bride-to-be doesn’t feel the stress of planning a wedding, no matter how much time she has? Have they ever heard of eloping?

According to PeopleEnEspanol.com, Shakira says concerning her wedding, “I don’t have time, but we’re patient. We’ll get married eventually, or we won’t, but we’re together and that’s what matters. We love each other and we want to stay like that. Why fix something that’s not broken?”

I guess sometimes, for some people, it’s really not the wedding band that matters—it’s the engagement ring! I would personally pick being married over engaged any day, but hey—maybe that’s just me.

Color Me Beautiful Wedding Gowns

Posted on November 8th, 2007 by Kori Ellis in Wedding Attire, News 6 Comments

David’s Bridal GownWedding gowns aren’t just white these days. Many brides are opting to add color to their wedding wardrobe by wearing pastel, metallic and even jewel-tone gowns.

Recently, I attended a wedding where the bride wore a sapphire blue strapless mermaid gown. And yes … this was her first wedding.

In this sense, I’m a little more of a traditionalist and prefer white or ivory wedding dresses. However, one trend that I do like is adding a little color by wearing a gown with a colored sash, bow, trim or hemline.

At David’s Bridal, they offer a variety of gowns with colored accents. I really love the gown pictured here. It is a strapless, satin A-line dress with a lace up back and a sweep train. You can choose from fourteen gorgeous trim colors, in order to match your bridesmaids dresses.

What do you think about colored wedding gowns? Are you sticking with white or getting a little more daring?

Happy 30th Wedding Anniversary to George & Laura Bush

Posted on November 6th, 2007 by Kori Ellis in Celebrity Weddings, Wedding Anniversaries, News 2 Comments

George and Laura BushThe presidential couple celebrated their 30th wedding anniversary yesterday. And without getting into politics or anything else, it’s always comforting to me to see any couple in it for the long haul.

Whether it’s the President of the United States or someone I have never heard of, long-lasting love is terrific. In this age when more than half of American marriages end in divorce, a long-term commitment is a beautiful thing.

Some are upset that very little media attention, or even acknowledgement, was given to the Bush’s wedding anniversary. Scott Whitlock at newsbusters.org points out that ABC’s “Good Morning America” made no mention of the event. However the show “fawned over” John Edwards and his wife celebrating their 30th anniversary in July. I applaud both couples!

George and Laura Bush were married on November 5, 1977 in a morning wedding ceremony in the Glass Chapel of the First United Methodist Chruch in Midland, Texas. The couple had 75 guests and didn’t have any bridesmaids or groomsmen. A testament to the fact that you don’t need to have a lavish wedding to make it last!

Couple Waits 27 Years for Wedding Pictures

Posted on November 6th, 2007 by Courtney in Wedding Photography, Wedding Anniversaries, News 4 Comments

Old photograph negativesYour wedding is something that you plan and plan and plan, and you’re certainly going to want to remember it forever! With all the frills you need to incorporate: your wedding dress, flowers, and a cake to name a few, those memories come at a pretty high cost. Let’s face it: even if you and your beau decide to elope, it still takes time and money to start a life together.

But what if those costs meant you’d have to wait 27 years to get your wedding pictures?

Believe it or not, Karen Cline and her husband, Mark, have had no photographs of their wedding that took place 27 years ago until just last week. Cline was busy working at a diner in Mansfield, Ohio, when Jim Wagner, the couple’s wedding photographer, now 80, surprised her with a wedding album.

Wagner said he’d been cleaning when he found the album. After running into Cline’s stepfather, he was able to track down the bride and give her the ultimate anniversary gift.

Talk about making the effort out of the goodness of your heart! Wagner said he “just thought [Cline] might like to have [the album].” He certainly didn’t expect anything in return.

When Cline saw the album, she “just stood there and cried and cried and hugged [Wagner].” Cline said that when she and her husband were married as teenagers they were devastated because they couldn’t afford to pay Wagner the $150 they owed. Instead they had to settle for one picture that a guest had taken as the bride walked down the aisle.

When Wagner finally caught up with Cline, though, she insisted on writing him a check on the spot! Clearly the couple has come a long way from their meager beginnings.

The couple celebrated their 27th wedding anniversary this past Thursday and I’m sure it was a special event, considering that one priceless gift.

Wedding Disaster - Family Encounters Thieves In Mexico

Posted on November 5th, 2007 by Kori Ellis in News 1 Comment

Imagine taking a year and a half to plan your wedding only to have it all fall apart in the end.

Well, that’s what happened to Mark and Courtney Schaefer when they traveled to the Mexican Resort town of Tulum, 60 miles south of Cancun, to celebrate their union of marriage.

The Bride and Groom, along with 70 other guests, checked into the Eurostars Blue Resort and it wasn’t long before they began to realize something wasn’t right. Mark’s father was the first to notice that his “secure” safe had been broken into, and all of his secured belongings missing.

When the issue was brought to the attention of Hotel personnel, nothing was done to remedy the situation. The Bride’s father, Judge Thomas Culver III, was informed that charges would be brought against the wedding guests for filing false reports. Can you believe that?

25 of 36 rooms booked by the guests had been broken into, damages totaling in the neighborhood of $100,000! Mind you, none of these rooms showed any signs of forced entry, yet the resort saw no reason to investigate the incident. Mark Schaefer stated, “If it was me and my resort, I would probably lock down the entire place to prevent anyone from entering or leaving.”

Due to this incident, the Bride and Groom had to cut their honeymoon short, but they are not letting it ruin a beautiful marriage. Of course, with the bride’s father having a little “pull” with officials, the event has definitely not been forgotten. The State Department has now been notified and is actively looking into the incident.

I just couldn’t imagine putting my wedding party or my guests through such an ordeal on the most beautiful day of my life. So here’s to you, Mark & Courtney, in proving that money and material things can’t buy you love!

‘Truly’ Childhood Sweethearts Celebrate Diamond Wedding Anniversary

Posted on November 1st, 2007 by Melissa in Wedding Anniversaries, News 1 Comment

Jessie and Bill Cocks as YoungstersYes, believe it or not, these kids have been holding hands since they were 2 years old! 77 years later, Jessie Fright and Bill Cocks, are now celebrating their Diamond Anniversary after 60 years of marriage. Born in Margate, Kent England, in 1927 and 1928, they were neighbors and best friends up until Jessie moved away to become a nanny. Bill’s family moved to Eastleigh, Hampshire during the war and they briefly lost contact. The couple kept in touch with love letters along the way and finally became engaged in April 1947, at the age of 19. They were married in St. Peters Church, on November 8th that same year.

Jessie and Bill Cocks on their Wedding DayJust three days later, Bill was sent to Germany where he served with the Army as part of the peacekeeping force. Soon after, the couple settled in Bishopstoke, near Hampshire England, and reside there to this day! They have raised 4 children by which they now have 8 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren. The loving couple has touted their marriage as an “achievement”, and Mrs. Cocks says, “you make your vows when you get married and you stick to them.”

Jessie and Bill Cocks after their Diamond Wedding AnniversaryCan you believe this story?! It just goes to show how love can concur all. Some parents try so hard to protect their kids from “early love”, but look at what can actually come of it. So many people look down on young marriages; apparently you don’t know what love is, unless you are at least 25! I was married at the age of 19; my husband 21, and we are deeply in love and happy with two beautiful children. I know I will be married to Eric until the day I die, and I look at these stories with glee and inspiration, as I will one day celebrate my Diamond Anniversary.

Let’s say congrats to this wonderful couple… 60 years down and many more to come! I give them the Truly Married award for a long and successful marriage. “Cheers”.

Couple Celebrates 70th Wedding Anniversary

Posted on October 30th, 2007 by Kori Ellis in Wedding Anniversaries, News

70 YEARS! That’s a long time if you think about it. Imagine being with the “One You Love” all that time. Well, that’s exactly what J.W. and Mable Best did. They have Truly beaten the odds.

The happy couple from East Texas, married in 1937, have only been apart one time during their marriage while J.W. served in WWII. “Naturally, I was worried about him because I knew he was going into battle, and I wrote him a letter everyday,” said Mable. The Best’s family held a celebration in J.W. and Mable’s honor Saturday. “I love her more today, than I did the day we met.” said J.W., adding that he “knew” she was the one.

After reading this article I wanted to see what the statistics are for couples sticking together this long. With the divorce rate at nearly 50%, what are the chances? Well, to my surprise, people are actually staying together longer, and the divorce rate is down, yet the rate of marriage is also down. The number of couples living together without any intention of getting married has increased.

I think that couples who share the same values as J.W. and Mable won’t have to worry about statistics one bit. Every couple should use the 2 “Key Things” that Mable says keeps a marriage together: Love & Devotion.

Let’s all toast to the “Bride & Groom” for a marriage well done! Truly exceptional!
