Heigl’s Honeymoon on Hold

Posted on January 9th, 2008 by Courtney in Celebrity Weddings, Funny 1 Comment

Honeymoon in MexicoYou’re all probably sick to death of hearing about Katherine Heigl’s wedding. (I know I’m getting close!) But it certainly seems like they’ve got some new news every week or so. Their PR people must be working overtime!

First it was the date and their plans, then it was how gorgeous the even was and what gown she was wearing (since she wouldn’t say before the big day). Well, now it’s all about her and her new husband Josh Kelley’s honeymoon.

I know! I’m sorry. I just couldn’t help posting about this!

Anyway, Extra TV reports that after Heigl and Kelley had their wintery Utah wedding she forgot her passport and he lost his ring! Talk about bad luck!

Less than 24 hours after their wedding, Kelley realized he didn’t have his wedding band anymore. (How does that happen?!) As it turns out, though, Heigl’s brother happened to find someone with a metal detector and they were able to find the band in the snow. Phew! I guess metal detectors really are a worthwhile investment.

As if that wasn’t enough, though, the morning before the newlyweds were set to leave on their honeymoon in Mexico, Kelley asked his new wife if she had her passport. All Heigl could say was “no,” and they had to return to L.A. before they could leave! Don’t worry, they still got to go, just a little later than they planned.

At least now we know those things happen to the stars too! Let this serve as a lesson to you all: keep your wedding ring close and your passport closer! Oh, and I guess it’s okay to keep your new spouse closest.

Say Yes to the Dress - Fitting the More Mature Bride

Posted on January 9th, 2008 by Kori Ellis in Say Yes to the Dress, Wedding Planning, Wedding Attire 4 Comments

Amalia Carrara GownI was watching another one of the taped episodes of Say Yes to the Dress last night. It was the one where Claudia returns from vacation. Have you seen it?

If not, it was a great one! You should try to catch the re-runs on TLC. I’m sure they will repeat it.

Again, Maura, Joan and Elise are frustrated with Claudia’s lack of sales … and of course, Claudia doesn’t seem to care much. However, they moved her room (each bridal consultant has an assigned room where they see clients and do fittings) to be right across from the management office. Now they can keep a close eye on her and watch her fail up close and personal. :)

The bride that was the most interesting to me on this episode was Amy, who was an older bride. I don’t know how old she was because she was a very lovely looking woman - but I’d guess she was upwards of 45. It was great to see a more mature bride getting so into her wedding planning.

Amy was Claudia’s client, and she tried on three or four gowns, two of which she liked a lot but couldn’t make a decision. Her budget was $5,000 or less. One of the dresses that she really liked was $8,100! I know that they really want to sell. But when you say your price range is $5K, they really shouldn’t pressure you into trying on a $8K dress. Anyway … that wasn’t my main point.

As the show went along, Claudia and the management encouraged Amy to go have lunch and then come back to try on the dresses again. They, of course, were hoping that she’d decide and buy that same day. When Amy returned, it was pretty chaotic as another bride was trying on one of her dresses (yes, this same thing happened in another episode … shouldn’t they get more than one dress in each style?).

Well Amy didn’t “Say Yes to the Dress.” She thought Claudia and the staff were being far too pushy. She didn’t give in to the pressure and put off her decision for another day. For this, I commend her. If you are ever out shopping for your bridal gown, don’t let the staff push you around. Amy had a point … $8,000 is a lot of money and it’s her money. If she needed more time, then that’s her prerogative.

The gowns in this show were beautiful again. Kleinfeld Bridal is obviously one of the best bridal shops in the business. The gowns they sell are absolutely fabulous. As in the last show, some of my favorites were from Pnina Tornai and Amalia Carrara.

One interesting part of this episode was that they showed downstairs at the bridal salon where all the alterations are done to make the gowns absolutely perfect for each bride. Each bead, rhinestone and pleat has to be just exactly right. Though it was brief, it was a nice new aspect of the show.

This show centered around brides that were getting married this past summer on 07-07-07. It was funny that some of them had chosen the date because of superstition or luck, while others were completely oblivious to it beeing 7-7-7 when they set their date.

Another bride that interested me on this episode of Say Yes to the Dress was Tina. She and her fiance had both been married twice before. So they were planning lucky number 3. The first gown that the consultant showed her featured a lot of color in the skirt.

I was happy when Tina nixed it and went for a more traditional white gown. Just because it’s your third time doesn’t mean you can’t wear white!

All in all, it was a good show. Claudia didn’t make any sales again and the rest of the storylines are interesting!

I’ll watch a couple more taped episodes later this week and let you know what I think!

What do you think about this show? Leave your comments and let us know.

Expert Wedding Tips: A Turn in Colors

Posted on January 8th, 2008 by Kori Ellis in Wedding Trends 2 Comments

Colorful CakeHere’s what’s hot for 2008 weddings, according to trendsetting designer Joyce Scardina Becker, Wedding Designer of Events of Distinction and author of Countdown To Your Perfect Wedding.

“I approach designing a wedding as if I were designing a home,” says Scardina Becker. “From ceremony to cocktails to reception, each room represents a transition of space, having its own personal identity, but still belonging to a cohesive whole. I work with lots of colors, fabrics, materials and lighting to create a ‘living space’ for the wedding and a fabulous experience for all. Each wedding ‘performance’ should be seamless and magical!”

A Turn in Colors

Complex and exotic describe the delicious and intriguing color trends for weddings:

Embrace nature with clever, extraordinary and unexpected color combinations…be daring…here are some palettes to ponder:

  • Tangerine with Azure Blue and a shot of Espresso
  • Sky Blue, Navy Blue, Celadon Green and a splash of Purple Wine
  • Glossy White, Metallic Grey, Bold Magenta and Sleek Black…very Chanel
  • Dark Cocoa, Seafoam Mint, Metallic Silver on Ivory
  • Blueberry, Raspberry, Lavender, Black and Charcoal Gray
  • Jewel tones mixed with antique metallic for Fall and Winter
  • Reinvent the wheel on Black and White, add a splash of apple green; or if you’ve already seen enough “green” weddings, try citrus yellow instead!
  • Glam it up with embroidered ribbons, broaches, buttons and feathers
  • Replace the single centerpiece with groupings of various heights and shapes of floral vessels
  • Illuminate your night with a professional lighting designer - create style that glows, decorate with eclectic arrangements of lanterns inside and out.

You can order Joyce’s book Countdown to Your Perfect Wedding, published by St. Martin’s Press, on www.amazon.com or www.barnesandnoble.com.

Thanks for the tips, Joyce!

Wedding Dresses: Ruffled Like a Royal

Posted on January 8th, 2008 by Courtney in Wedding Attire 1 Comment

Princess dress beachAlthough sleeker wedding dresses are becoming more and more popular as time goes on, sometimes it’s just hard to give up the fantasy of wearing that Cinderella-style dress you imagined you’d wear as a little girl. Something about a fitted top and an oversized, poofy skirt just screams ‘princess,’ doesn’t it?

Well, if you’ve chosen to go the more modern route with your dress, this post isn’t really for you. (Come on now: how silly would a silky, slimming dress look with zillions of layers underneath?!)

If, however, you are going to indulge your long-standing desire to feel like royalty (with the help of a LOT of tulle), you do have a couple of options for making the bottom half of your dress as full as you’d like it to be: hoopskirts and crinolines.

Don’t know which option is best for you? Here’s a little more info on each:

Hoopskirts: You may be thinking these died out a few years after Oklahoma! hit the stages, but they most certainly did not! In fact, many brides use them to give their skirts the full look they were hoping for. An added bonus: hoops keep a lot of material off your legs so you don’t get quite as hot while you’re trekking around trying to get those perfect wedding day photos.

Crinolines: If you don’t really like the idea of adding old school charm with a hoopskirt, using a crinoline with your dress might be a good option. A crinoline is basically tulle that helps add layers under your dress’ layers. If you go with a crinoline, you’ll want to purchase one with a liner, or that tulle will keep you itchy all day long! Of course, you have the option of wearing your crinoline over a hoopskirt, but only go that route if you are looking to have a very, very full skirt!

If you’re still not sure which sounds like the better option, you can always give each a try at your next fitting. Many wedding dress stores and tailors carry hoopskirts and crinolines to help give the most accurate visual. If you want to try either, just go ahead and ask!

Katherine Heigl’s Wedding Photos

Posted on January 6th, 2008 by Kori Ellis in Celebrity Weddings 2 Comments

Katherine Heigl’s Wedding PhotosCheck out Katherine Heigl and Josh Kelley’s wedding photos from OK! Magazine over at thejjb.com. Katherine and Josh look just adorable! What a beautiful couple. The two were married on December 23, 2007.

They also offer a few quotes from Katherine and Josh about the wedding and being married.

On her initial thoughts about a winter wedding: “I don’t think either one of us was thinking a Christmas wedding. Originally it was because I only get two weeks a year for my Christmas vacation… but then we really got excited about it.”

On choosing to wed Utah’s in Deer Valley where Josh had vacationed with his family in his younger years.: “We wanted to do it in a place that felt like a winter wonderland. We incorporated lots of big evergreens in the reception with twinkle lights and Christmas decorations.”

On how it feels to be married: “We’re elated! We have never lived together.” (Josh added: “We don’t even sleep in the same bed when family is around!”)

On how marriage will change things: “This new house means now we are in this together. It means compromise on style, taste and how each one of us lives, how we don’t like to live and how we’re going to work it all out. It’s going to be an amazing place to start our lives together and start a family.”

On how soon kids are coming: “I’d like to start talking children seriously in the next year but Josh feels more like two years, so we’ll probably do a year and a half.” (Josh added: “My view is, let’s take it one day and one child at a time!”)

5 Things to do With Your Wedding Dress

Posted on January 6th, 2008 by Courtney in Do It Yourself, Wedding Attire 2 Comments

Bride WindowIf you’re anything like me you absolutely insisted that you needed to buy your wedding dress. Renting a gown was complete nonsense—you want to keep your dress forever!!

Well, even though your wedding dress carries a lot of memories with it, there are many brides who look back on their decision to purchase with regret. Many wedding dresses simply sit in the closet as years pass by until they are one day gotten rid of or forgotten.

There are a few things you can do if you keep your wedding dress and decide you don’t want it anymore years later. Here are just 5 good options to consider:

  1. Donate It: There are many good causes out there that could benefit from your wedding dress donation. Places like Goodwill or Salvation Army would be glad to take it off your hands and sell it for a good cause. You can also check out Making Memories, and help the Brides Against Breast Cancer if you’d rather.
  2. Sell It Yourself: This option might make it a little harder to let your dress go, but if you’re tight on money (especially the first year or two!) selling might be a good option.
  3. Recycle It: No, I don’t mean turn it into your local recycling center. I mean you could turn the fabric into another memorable piece. If you are religious, you could take your dress to a tailor and have the material turned into baptism clothing or a christening gown for one of your children a few years down the road.
  4. Get Sewing: If you’d like to keep your dress as an heirloom that would be a little more visible in your home, you could deconstruct it and turn the material into a quilt. This way you would still have a precious memory to pass on, but it would never have to be resized.
  5. Hold onto It: If you’re the sentimental type and you have no regrets about buying your dress, there’s nothing wrong with keeping it. Maybe one day your daughter, granddaughter, even a niece or would like to wear it and start a family legacy of sorts. If not, you’ll still have an amazing memory from one of the happiest days of your life!

Winter Wedding: Keeping Warm

Posted on January 6th, 2008 by Courtney in Wedding Trends, Wedding Planning 1 Comment

snowbride.jpgMost brides pride themselves on having their wedding bells in April, May, or June, but really, can you imagine anything more romantic than red roses and snowflakes falling all around you on your wedding day?

There is certainly something about the atmosphere of a still, snowy winter’s day that reminds us of Elizabeth Bennett finally getting together with Mr. Darcy and leaves us feeling all warm inside. That is, at least for the romantic bride.

Aside from the warm fuzzies you’ll get from experiencing your fantasy wedding, though, you’re bound to be pretty cold if you’re dwelling around outside in an attempt to get pictures, or especially if you insisted on an outdoor ceremony to set the ‘winter wonderland’ mood. Fortunately, there are a few extra things you can do to make sure you’ll stay warm even when it’s oh so cold outside.

  1. Stop by Starbucks: You’ll definitely want to be all warmed up on the inside if you’re going to brave the winter winds. Stop by your favorite coffee shop and get something that will warm you up before you walk down the aisle.
  2. Wear Your Hair Down: Even if you are having your wedding somewhere that is notorious for humidity, on cold winter days your hair is a lot less likely to go flat than it would be in summer months. Also, by wearing your hair down, you’ll avoid having your ears turn as red as Rudolph’s nose!
  3. Accessorize: Winter weddings make it possible to add extra accessories you wouldn’t see in the summer. Having a wedding cloak and hand muff could add a romantic element to some of your pictures while keeping you warm at the same time. You’ll probably wear just your dress at the reception, so it might be fun to look a little different for the actual ceremony!
  4. Keep Your Feet in Mind: You probably should opt out of open-toed shoes for your winter wedding; that’s a given. Have you thought about wearing furry white boots though? Not only will your feet be warm, you’ll have a very distinctive style about you!
  5. Watch the Clock: You’ll want to make sure an outdoor ceremony is short, sweet, and to the point and that it goes of without a hitch. Not only will watching the clock keep you from spending extra minutes in the bitter cold, your guests will appreciate the chance to get out of the cold sooner too!

Wedding Planning with Beyonce and Jay-Z

Posted on January 4th, 2008 by Kori Ellis in Wedding Planning, Celebrity Weddings, News 1 Comment

Beyonce and Jay-ZBeyonce and Jay-Z have reportedly begun planning their wedding. The couple has been engaged since June, however they hadn’t started doing any planning. I was beginning to think they might be one of those couples that stays engaged forever.

The Globe (I know, not the best source) is reporting that Beyonce has now started to look for venues.

Their source says, “There was a time when Beyonce wanted an enormous fairy-tale wedding, but now she’s a masterminding a smaller party in New York.

“At the moment, she considering either The Carlyle or Peninsula Hotel.”

I love Beyonce! So I can’t wait to see what she does with her wedding. Hopefully we’ll be able to get some details soon on the plans!

Spring 2008 Bridal Collection: Oscar de La Renta

Posted on January 3rd, 2008 by Kori Ellis in Wedding Planning, Wedding Attire 3 Comments

Though many of us could never afford them, it’s certainly is fun to look at designer bridal gowns.

In this video, you can view the Oscar de la Renta Spring 2008 Bridal collection. Here you will see a wide variety of designs and silhouettes, including beaded ball gowns, lace sheaths and even a casual satin dress with a fringe bottom.

I surprised myself by loving the all lace gown around the 2:20 mark of the video. I’m not normally a fan of lace dresses.

Which bridal gown is your favorite?
